Medication Procedures and Reporting Illness Guidelines

Dear Parents,

Please read this communication and keep it handy so you can refer to it should the need arise.

1. NO "over the counter" medications will be given without a doctors order. This includes (Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Tums, Midol, Excedrine.....), homeopathic (Zycam), and prescription.
2. All medication must be kept in the Nurse's Office.
3. Only medication ordered by your doctor will be given.
4. Long Term Prescription Drugs will be dispensed only by the school nurse. Return the parent's consent form and the doctor's written order form in order for the medication to be given.
5. Short Term Prescription Drugs need only parent's written permission and medication in the original prescription container (for example antibiotics).
7. Some pharmacies will provide an extra container for school use upon request.
8. Parents must bring the medication to the nurse in its original sealed bottle - medication is not to be brought in by the students.
9. A one time dose of regular strength Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen will be dispensed to your child until their needed medication arrived in the nurse's office. A parent's signed permission slip needs to be on file in the health office and the med will be dispensed under the School Physician's standing medication order.

If your child is ill with a contagious illness/disease, notify the school nurse. Strep Infections, Conjunctivitis, Chickenpox, and Mono: require a doctor's note to return to school. The diagnosis must be written on the note.
If your son/daughter is excused from physical education for and illness or injury by his/her medical doctor they will need a medical note from their doctor to return to physical education.
Report all concussions to the school nurse regardless of missed school or not.

If your child has a fever of 100 degrees or higher, it is advisable that he/she remain at home until the child is fever-free for a period of 24 hours, without taking fever reducing medication. Let the office know they are out with a fever as the school procedure request.

Chapter 71, Section 57, of the Mass General Laws and the Department of Public Health Regulations mandates that each school system adhere to the following:
1. Physical examinations to be preformed on all students upon entering school and every 3-4 years. In our school district this is done PRIOR to entering school, prior to grade 3, prior to grade 7, and prior to grade 10. These physicals are not provided by the school. Students in Grade 11 may not attend school after the first semester unless they have had the required physical exam.
2. Immunizations are required at regular intervals.
3. Students participating in interscholastic athletic activities must have a current physical on file in the Nurse's Office. Current is referring to 13 months from the students last completed physical.

If your child receives any type of immunization booster, please make certain the nurse is notified in writing with a note specifying date and type of immunization signed by the doctor.

*** School Health Policy for exclusion from school due to incomplete immunization for medical and religious reasons:
If a student who is not fully immunized is exposed to a diagnosed case of a vaccine-preventable disease, he/she will be excluded from school according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Regulations. The most common diseases include, but are not limited to the following: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chickenpox, and Pertussis. As soon as a physician confirms the diagnosis, the parent will be notified. Specifics regarding the time of exclusion vary with each illness and will be explained when pertinent.
