Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School recently launched its inaugural eSports program this spring, providing students with a new opportunity to compete and collaborate as part of a team while representing the school in competitive gaming.

The program currently includes eight student players competing in Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart, with plans to expand game offerings in the future.  During its first season, the focus has been on establishing a strong foundation through regular practices, coaching support, and collaboration with the district’s IT team to navigate the technical aspects required to launch the program.

“We are thrilled to have piloted our new eSports program this spring and are excited to see it continue to grow heading into the fall season,” said Matt McKinnon, Director of Athletics & Activities at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School.  “This program highlights how Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School truly has something to offer every student.  Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the arena, we are proud to provide opportunities that allow all of our students to find their place and pursue their passions.”

The team has already experienced exciting moments during its first season, including a thrilling 6–5 victory over Nipmuc Regional High School in Super Smash Bros., marking an early highlight for the young program.

Coaches Jolie Streeter and Christian Tavares said the program has already created a positive team environment where students support and encourage one another while developing both their individual gameplay and teamwork.

“The goal of our eSports program is to provide students with a welcoming, team-based environment where they can build collaboration skills, professionalism, and social confidence through competitive gaming,” said Streeter and Tavares.  “It’s been exciting to see students who might not otherwise join a traditional sports team become enthusiastic about showing up to practice each week and competing together.”

Although the team will not advance to the playoffs this season, coaches say the program made significant progress during its short inaugural campaign and is already looking ahead to continued growth in the seasons ahead.

“We are extremely excited to offer competitive eSports and have been so proud of the progress our students and moderators made this year,” said Principal Dustin Demers. “This is yet another example of how there is something for everyone at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School.”

School officials hope the program will continue to grow in the coming years, giving more students an opportunity to participate while building teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills in a competitive and supportive environment.
